Rod Maceda Reboots Puppy Love—This Time With AI, Analog Soul, and Total Creative Control
By Nick Sandoval
CEBU CITY — After years away from long-form filmmaking, Rod Maceda is back—and he’s rewriting the rules. The founder and CEO of WCN (World Cybervision Network) is embracing AI filmmaking to relaunch Puppy Love, the beloved drama series that once defined a moment in Bisaya pop culture. This reboot promises no delays, no production deadlocks, and a bold hybrid of human performance and artificial intelligence.
At 43, Maceda is no stranger to reinvention. Long before his rise in the Bisaya music scene, he cut his teeth in Manila showbiz as a graphic designer, storyboard artist, screenwriter, and comic book illustrator. Today, those skills converge in a future-facing production model that gives him what every filmmaker craves: precision, speed, and autonomy.
Why AI—and Why Now
“Everything happens for a reason,” Maceda reflects. He admits that had AI filmmaking been available a decade ago, his original Puppy Love experience might have been very different. Production hurdles, creative compromises, and the realities of working with unprepared talent weighed heavily on him then.
Over time, Maceda made peace with the changing creative landscape—especially as younger artists gravitated toward short-form, viral fame over long-form storytelling. For a while, he stepped away from film altogether, focusing instead on music.
That changed when friends from Ukraine and Russia introduced him to AI filmmaking. The possibilities were immediate and liberating.
Rod Maceda shares:
“As a visual storyteller, I realized I could finally translate what’s in my head—frame by frame—without the usual stress,” he says. “It brought me back to life creatively.”
The Puppy Love Hybrid
The new Puppy Love is neither fully animated nor traditionally shot. It’s a hybrid—AI-generated visuals paired with real human voices and likenesses, governed by clear agreements. Actors retain royalties and ownership of their facial identities, while contributing as voice performers.
The result? A leaner, more sustainable production. “It’s super cost-efficient,” Maceda explains. “No massive crews, no on-set logistics, no unnecessary pressure. What audiences will see is the pure story—exactly as I envisioned it.”
For fans, that means consistency and clarity. For creators, it signals a shift toward smarter, artist-led production models.
Will AI Replace Human Actors?
Maceda doesn’t believe in absolutes.
“Nothing is impossible,” he says. “We adapt, or we disappear.” Still, he’s quick to emphasize that human actors remain essential—now and in the near future.
His vision is fusion: AI when it serves the story, real-world shoots when they add depth. “There are no rules,” he says. “What matters is delivering the message—to the people who believe in the work, and to the fans who grew up with Puppy Love.”
Beyond the Screen
This summer, Maceda returns to live television with a guest appearance on Hello Cebu Maayong Buntag Pinoy, coinciding with the mainstream media launch of his LP album of original Bisaya songs. One standout track, “Ingna Ko,” serves as the official OST of Puppy Love.
In true analog-meets-digital fashion, the album is available in CD, USB, Vinyl, and Cassette—exclusively via the music store on his official website.
