WCN Unveils AI-Powered Mortal Kombat Fan Film Inspired by the Golden Age of '80s and '90s Martial Arts Cinema
HOLLYWOOD — WCN has announced the development of an ambitious, AI-powered Mortal Kombat fan film scheduled for a free public premiere on the WCN Telegram channel in 2028.
Conceived as a non-commercial tribute to the iconic video game franchise, the project aims to capture the gritty, high-energy spirit of classic 1980s and 1990s martial arts cinema. The film is created, written, produced, directed, and edited by independent filmmaker and auteur Rod Maceda.
According to the creative concept, the fan film imagines an all-star dream cast featuring Bruce Lee as Liu Kang, Jean-Claude Van Damme as Johnny Cage, Cynthia Rothrock as Sonya Blade, Bruce Willis as Kano, Ken Watanabe as Raiden, Jackie Chan as Shang Tsung, and Phoebe Cates as Princess Kitana.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the project, Maceda said:
"I'm just playing like a kid and having fun. I've spent so many years working in independent films and television that I felt it was finally time to relax, enjoy the creative process, and reconnect with the excitement I had growing up.
Ever since I was young, I've been a huge fan of Mortal Kombat and so many action films from the '80s and '90s. I still remember saving part of my school allowance when I was 14 so I could watch the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie in theaters. I was completely obsessed with the arcade game.
Even before that film was released, when I first played the original 1992 arcade game, I imagined Bruce Lee as Liu Kang, Jean-Claude Van Damme as Johnny Cage, and the always-amazing Cynthia Rothrock as Sonya Blade. Those images stayed with me for decades.
My version begins with the feeling I had playing that original arcade game. To me, it always felt like a hardcore Hong Kong Shaolin martial arts adventure. It reminded me of films like American Shaolin of Reese Madigan—the music, the golden-hour cinematography, the beach sequences, and that classic martial arts atmosphere.
This project is simply my way of bringing those childhood dreams to life. AI has given me the opportunity to paint my imagination digitally and visualize the kind of movie I always wished I could make. For me, it's about creativity, nostalgia, and reconnecting with that sense of wonder we all had as kids."
WCN emphasizes that the production is a fan-made, AI-powered tribute created purely for entertainment and nostalgic appreciation. The film is not for sale and is intended exclusively for free public viewing on the WCN Telegram channel upon its planned 2028 release.
