In the waning years of Spanish rule in the Philippine Islands, an ambitious project was underway to construct a majestic bridge that would gracefully span the Pasig River.
This proposed structure aimed to connect the vibrant district of Santa Cruz at Plaza Goiti—now known as Plaza Lacson—to the southern banks of the river, facilitating access to Calle Arroceros, which is today called Padre Burgos Street. The initial phases of construction were carried out diligently, with sturdy foundations laid and two impressive piers and abutments rising to the low-water mark. However, progress ground to a halt as the nation descended into turmoil, leading to the abandonment of the project.
When the Americans assumed control of the Philippines, the new colonial administration recognized the need to complete the abandoned bridge. Under their guidance, the structure was meticulously reconstructed, and on March 1, 1902, it was finally inaugurated, becoming a vital artery for the bustling city.
Sadly, the bridge met a tragic fate during World War II when it was destroyed by the Imperial Japanese Army during their retreat before advancing American troops. Yet, resilience prevailed, and in 1952, the bridge was rebuilt, receiving the name MacArthur Bridge in honor of General Douglas MacArthur, a pivotal figure in the liberation of the Philippines.
This act not only restored the bridge's physical presence but also solidified its historical significance in the nation's journey toward freedom.
