Huawei releases HarmonyOS 2.0 beta for select phones, still lets you roll back to EMUI 11
Huawei released the first version of its in-house operating system, HarmonyOS, which supports smartphones (the first version made its debut on a smart TV). The software is currently in beta and both users and developers are invited to try it out. The phones that are supported currently are: Huawei P40, P40 Pro, Mate 30 (and the 5G version) and Mate 30 Pro (and its 5G version). One tablet can install the new OS too, the Huawei MatePad Pro (Wi-Fi and LTE models, plus the 5G one). Many more EMUI 11 devices should be supported in the future, but the first beta version is limited to devices listed above. HarmonyOS 2.0 Beta can be delivered to those devices Over The Air, if you can sign up on this page (note: it’s in Chinese). If...
Philippines still free of new Covid strain
THE more contagious strain of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) had not reached the country so far, a health expert said on Thursday. “Based on our findings, the other variant detected in England is not yet here,” Dr. Jaime Montoya, executive director of Philippine Council of Health Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology said in a press briefing. He added that the new variant emerged because the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 — the virus causing Covid-19 — was always mutating. “That is expected,” he said. “The question is if there are big or small changes in the virus’ behavior, if it becomes more deadly or cause complications.” Montoya noted that the new variant was found to be...
Lawyer: Video taker is best source to 'authenticate' Nuezca footage but other evidence can be used
The testimony of the person who captured the Gregorio murders in Tarlac on video will be strong evidence against Police Master Sergeant Jonel Nuezca, but other forms of evidence can also be used, a lawyer said Thursday. Philippine National Police chief General Debold Sinas earlier said the video taker seemed hesitant to testify in court. The primary source to "authenticate" the video, so it could be admissible as "object/real evidence," would be the one who took it, said National Union of Peoples' Lawyers (NUPL) president Edre Olalia. If the video taker is unwilling or unable to testify, the people who saw it being taken or those captured in the footage could also speak up, he said. But in this case, it could be admitted as...
China turns on its ‘artificial sun’ in quest for nuclear fusion energy
China on Friday made another step forward in its quest for clean energy through controlled nuclear fusion, as it commissioned its new “artificial sun” – a new generation nuclear fusion reactor research facility which operates at a temperature 10 times as hot as the sun. According to China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), the HL-2M Tokamak apparatus is able to operate at 150 million degrees Celsius – almost three times hotter than the previous version called HL-2A. The ability to generate such ultra-high temperature is essential for the research of fusion process, replicating the way the sun produces energy using hydrogen and deuterium gases as fuels. The sun only operates at a temperature of 15 million degrees Celsius. The...
Ball dropped? Vaccine deal with Pfizer in progress, PH envoy says
https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1372292/lacson-asks-who-dropped-the-ball-on-pfizer-vaccine-deal MANILA, Philippines — Who “dropped the ball” in the delivery of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines? It was a Cabinet official who “keeps dropping the ball but… stays in the game,” Senator Panfilo Lacson told INQUIRER.net in a text message on Wednesday. “The coach refuses to replace him,” he added. Before this, Lacson asked Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. during a Commission on Appointments (CA) hearing for the nomination of two Philippine ambassadors earlier in the day who “dropped the ball” on the Pfizer vaccines. In response, Locsin, who attended the hearing virtually, said: “I think it’s enough that I really lost my temper...
Sydney eases lockdown
Sydney on Thursday eased lockdown restrictions for Christmas after Australia’s largest city reported a second day of new coronavirus cases in the single digits. Amid a record testing and tracing effort, just eight new cases were recorded in the past 24 hours, prompting authorities to announce all residents could have at least some visitors over to celebrate the festive period. “Everybody has had a very difficult year,” said state Premier Gladys Berejiklian, announcing the “modest” three-day easing of restrictions. Berejiklian said most Sydneysiders would be allowed to invite 10 adults to their homes, with that number limited to five in the neighborhoods at the epicenter of the outbreak. She said the relaxing of rules was possible...
Thoughts about the shooting incident?
May their souls rest in peace.

Huawei Officially Launches Its Google Maps Rival in Over 140 Countries
Huawei’s legal trouble in the United States and elsewhere has forced the company to increase its focus on an in-house operating system and apps supposed to pave the way for a world without Google. Due to the sanctions announced by the U.S. government, Huawei is no longer allowed to use software and hardware developed by American companies, and these include both Android and Google apps. In other words, its smartphones can no longer come pre-loaded with Google goodies, so Huawei’s best option was to invest in alternative solutions that would be bundled with its devices. Huawei Petal Maps is the Chinese tech giant’s response to Google Maps, and the application was finally launched earlier this month not only on the domestic market...
Moderna, Arcturus ready to supply 25M vaccines to PHL
Two more American biopharmaceutical firms Moderna and Arcturus are ready to supply four to 25 million of their respective COVID-19 vaccines to the Philippines, Manila's top diplomat to Washington said Friday. Philippine Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez said the vaccines will be ready beginning third quarter of 2021 should the Philippine government find their proposals acceptable. "We are hoping our government will consider the promising candidates of Moderna and Arcturus for inclusion in our country's pool of anti-COVID vaccines," Romualdez said in a statement. A US panel of experts has voted to recommend emergency approval of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine, paving the way for six million doses to start shipping as soon as this weekend...
Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 888 processor will power the Android flagships of 2021
Qualcomm has officially announced the Snapdragon 888 at its Snapdragon Tech Summit, offering a first look at its next-generation flagship smartphone processor. The 888 will power the next wave of 2021 Android flagships from companies like Samsung, OnePlus, LG, Sony, and more. In a first for the company’s top-of-the-line 8-series chipsets, the Snapdragon 888 is making a big improvement for 5G: it’ll finally offer a fully integrated 5G modem, unlike last year’s Snapdragon 865 (which required that manufacturers include a separate modem chip inside the cramped interior of a modern smartphone). THE FUTURE OF ANDROID FLAGSHIPS IS HERE The Snapdragon 888 will feature Qualcomm’s X60 modem, announced earlier this year, which jumps to a 5nm...
Paano nakuha ng China ang Scarborough Shoal?
President Rody Duterte chose for his foreign policy the engagement of China rather than the way of confrontation which his predecessor former President Noynoy Aquino or PNoy took. Rody’s efforts to mend ties with China were then spun by his critics, who are the yellow supporters of PNoy and the pro-American groups, as surrendering sovereignty. The Chinese buildup in the contested West Philippine Sea and the subsequent installation of weapon systems in the artificial islands are then blamed on Rody’s policy shift. History, however, has a way of exposing the truth, and it has turned out that the tandem of PNoy and his then-backdoor negotiator Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV may have had a lot to do with the loss of the Panatag (Scarborough)...
