"While water cleanses what is tainted and nourishes what is pure, the fire purges what is impure and refines what is valuable."

Matthew 3:11 - “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and He will clear His threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

Let's segregate and check the meaning of some of the words:

"Whose sandals I am not worthy to carry": This is a humble statement from John. In the cultural context of the time, carrying someone's sandals was a job reserved for the lowest of servants. John is saying that he is so unworthy compared to Jesus that he wouldn't even be fit to perform this menial task.

"His winnowing fork is in His hand" refers to Jesus as the coming judge who has the authority to separate the righteous from the wicked.

"He will clear his threshing floor" speaks to the process of judgment, where Jesus will separate the faithful (wheat) from the unfaithful (chaff).

The wheat represents believers, those who are true to God, and will be gathered into His kingdom.

The chaff represents unbelievers or those who reject God’s call to repentance, and they will be burned in unquenchable fire, symbolizing eternal judgment.

Dual purpose of Fire:
Righteous = represent purification and empowerment
Wicked = judgment and destruction

In the Old Testament, there are some unnatural occurrences with fire.

Moses (represents the law)
The burning bush - The fire that does not consume highlights the purification and sustaining nature of God’s holiness. The Law given to Israel is meant to purify and reveal the will of God, but it also shows how human beings need God's grace—the fire that does not consume demonstrates that God’s holiness can refine and purify us without destroying us if we are in covenant with Him.

Elijah (represents the prophets)
Elijah's Sacrifice - The fire speaks of God’s authority to judge sin and vindicate the truth. It serves as a warning to those who would follow false gods. In Elijah's case, the fire represents God's judgment on idolatry and the complete defeat of false religion. It contrasts with Moses’ fire in that it is not about revelation or purification but about justice and vindication of God’s truth.

There was also a story in Daniel 3:25 about the fire that does not consume: “I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.”

The three men refused to compromise, trusting that God would deliver them (Daniel 3:17-18).
The names Mishael, Azariah, and Hananiah are Hebrew names with significant meanings:

Mishael: Means "Who is like God?" or "Who is what God is?" It emphasizes the unique and incomparable nature of God.

Azariah: Means "Yahweh has helped" or "The Lord has helped." It signifies God's assistance and support in times of need.

Hananiah: Means "Yahweh is gracious" or "God has been gracious." It reflects God's kindness, mercy, and favor.

These three men, known in the Bible as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, were given Babylonian names by King Nebuchadnezzar. Their original Hebrew names highlight their strong faith in Yahweh and their reliance on God's grace and power.

Just as the fourth figure appeared in the fire, Jesus is always with us, even in life’s most difficult moments and with us in our struggles. (Isaiah 43:2)
After witnessing the miracle, Nebuchadnezzar praised God and promoted them (Daniel 3:28-30).

But what are the possible signs that we have been baptized by Spirit & Fire?
Were our hearts changed? That we seek to live righteously and holy.
To have boldness? Not arrogance, but courage to stand for truth.
To be drawn to intimacy with God? prayer, worship, Word, etc?
Or tacking challenges with unwavering faith and coming out stronger?

Here are the supporting verses:

Zechariah 13:9 states that God will "bring the one-third through the fire, refine them like silver, and test them like gold. They will call on my name, and I will answer them; I will say, 'They are my people,' and they will say, 'The LORD is our God.'"

In Acts 2:3-4, the disciples, gathered in one place, witnessed the appearance of what seemed like tongues of fire, each resting on one of them, and were filled with the Holy Spirit, enabling them to speak in other languages.

Malachi 3:2-3 states: "But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears? For He is like a Refiner's fire and like launderers' soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer to the LORD an offering in righteousness."

Malachi 4:1 states "Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and that day that is coming will set them on fire," says the LORD Almighty. "Not a root or a branch will be left to them.

Isaiah 41:15-16 “Behold, I will make you into a new threshing sledge with sharp teeth; You shall thresh the mountains and beat them small, And make the hills like chaff. You shall winnow them, the wind shall carry them away, And the whirlwind shall scatter them; You shall rejoice in the Lord, And glory in the Holy One of Israel.

This also relates to the The Parable of the Wheat and Tares, found in Matthew 13:24-30
Revelation 14:14-20 describes a vision of a harvest, with "one like the Son of Man" reaping the earth, followed by another angel gathering grapes into a winepress, resulting in a flood of blood.

In Luke 12:49, Jesus states, "I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!".

So when the fire comes, imagine the story of the Fiery Furnace - with Shadrach, Mishach, and Abednego and maybe asked yourself at some point, am I becoming of God or as an enemy?
We need to ask and tell ourselves the meaning behind three man names.
"Who is our God?" "Our God is gracious" and "He helps".

We rarely talk about this baptism of spirit and fire - this one is radical and the ultimate process compared to the water baptism as the "greatest prophet" John said.

The baptism of the Spirit and fire is a transformative grace, refining our hearts and empowering us to live holy lives, reflecting God's love and drawing us closer to Him. It's a journey of purification and empowerment, leading us towards a deeper relationship with the divine.
