It's considered an important process in close relationships.

The same romantic gesture can therefore carry very different emotional meanings depending on who's doing it.

A generic gift may feel less meaningful than a tiny gesture showing that someone remembered something personally important to you.

Being responsive requires noticing what matters to the specific person rather than simply performing stereotypically romantic behaviors.

That's one reason expensive romance isn't automatically intimate romance.

Sometimes “I remembered you hate onions” communicates more personal understanding than a bouquet chosen without knowing what you actually like.
