THE Department of Education (DepEd) has announced that classes will begin on August 24, 2020.

However, a 31-year-old public senior high school teacher in Mandaue City E×ρréššed concerns about the opening of classes amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 31-year-old Research teacher at Don Gerardo Ll. Ouano Memorial National High School said he is not confident to start classes with the current Covid-19 situation.

He also noted that there were reports of Covid-19 positive cases in the barangay where the school he teaches at is situated.

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT), in a statement released on May 19, also called on DepEd and the government to provide free mass testing for education workers and learners (with parental consent) who have symptoms and exposure to Covid-19 cases; those who have no symptoms but are exposed to Covid-19 patients; those who have symptoms but with no exposure history; and the vulnerable sector including senior citizens, persons with illnesses and *******t women.

Sought for comment, Salustiano Jimenez, DepEd 7 director, said mass testing for those with symptoms is possible but mass testing for all personnel and all learners is impossible because of the number.

Central Visayas has a total of 82,000 teaching and non-teaching personnel and about 2.3 million learners. Of the number, around 7,000 personnel and an estimated 200,000 learners are from Cebu City.

He said he already forged an agreement with the LGUs that part of their special education fund can be allocated for ******* and mask supply.

Jimenez said protocol on what actions to take should a teacher or learner be found to have Covid-19 are included in their learning continuity plan.

As of now, based on their records, two teachers, one school principal and six learners have tested positive for Covid-19.

The ACT also asked DepEd to compensate teachers’ additional working load and extended working hours in the new mode of teaching.

Jimenez said teaching and non-teaching staff of schools who physically report to school are entitled to a P500 daily hazard pay.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones, during the “Laging Handa” briefing on May 5, announced the opening of classes on August 24.

She said students may not physically report back to school as it can be done through either online or offline methods.

Teaching and non-teaching personnel, however, are required to report for work on June 1, either physically or via online platforms.

Enrolment will be held on June 1 to 30.

John said their school is eyeing two ways to conduct the June enrolment: either online or through personal enrolment in which only parents are allowed to transact in school. (WBS)
