Tight Socks 5 is a small and efficient program that allows you to create a single or multiple server socks at home or at your office in just a few clicks.
Basically a server socks is what is commonly called a proxy server. It allows you to mask your real IP address. All traffic (packets) will go through the server socks program. The target destination (a web site for example) will only ‘see’ the server socks IP and not your real address.

Socks 5 is an update of the Socks 4 protocol with the big difference that Socks 5 supports the authentication process which is very important if you don’t want to see anybody using your proxy server without your authorization.
How it works
Because TightSocks5 is a server program, the first step is to forward your ports. You must create a rule in your router to allow the incoming and outgoing traffic through the chosen port.
Chose a non too common port or port range to avoid an application conflict. The best option is to choose port 1024. Below that one most of them are reserved for other duties.

As soon as you have successfully forwarded your port or port range (in the case you want to use many port as proxy server) you can create your first proxy server.
Choose the port (previously forwarded) and click on the [+] (see picture below) button to the right.

A new window will popup. It recommends you to use an authentication process to be able to connect through this new proxy server. Choose a username and a strong password (passwords are stored in a local database for the next start up and are hashed).

When you are ready just click on “Finalize” button and your new proxy server should be added to the main window list.
You can repeat this process as often as you wish but you should of course different ports (in the case you want to run only one server on your computer only one server is more than sufficient).
When you are ready, just click on the “Launch” button.

- A green tick icon means the server has successfully started.
- A red cross means the server could not listen to the port (most of the case because this port is already in use as a server).
In that case you will need to change the port or simply find the application that already listening to that port and shutdown the process to try again (use the ‘Stop’ button then the ‘Launch’ button).
