THE number of confirmed cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in the Philippines rose to 217, with 15 new cases announced Thursday, March 19.

The health department's Covid-19 tracker showed that of the 15 new cases, five are admitted at the Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center (PH209, PH210, PH211, PH212 and PH213); four at The Medical City-Ortigas (PH203, PH205, PH206 and PH207); two at the Philippine Heart Center (PH208 and PH215); two at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center (PH216 and PH217); and one each at the Manila Doctors Hospital (PH204) and Capitol Medical Center (PH214).

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 19) — Valenzuela City has reported Thursday its first case of the novel coronavirus disease or COVID-19.

The local government announced that the city's first case was a 34-year-old woman with no travel history but was exposed to someone who visited Malaysia.

The patient is currently exhibiting mild flu-like symptoms and is under strict home quarantine, following guidelines of the Department of Health.

MANILA - Philippine Airlines said Thursday it would mount "sweeper flights" from Cebu to Manila and Tokyo to ferry foreigners stranded because of the COVID-19 lockdown.

The flag carrier scheduled 2 round-trip flights on Thursday between Cebu and Manila, and will mount another flight on Friday from Cebu to Narita, gateway to Tokyo, Japan, PAL spokesperson Cielo Villaluna said.

Doctors in Seattle have been reduced to making their own face masks out of sheets of plastic, after a global shortage of medical protective gear has hit Washington state, an epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States.

Ahead of an anticipated shortage of medical supplies, hospital staff met in a conference room south of Seattle to make homemade masks for the doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals on the frontline of tackling the coronavirus outbreak.

SPANISH FLU = occured in 1918; infected 500 million people. The death toll is estimated to have been anywhere from 17 million to 50 million, and possibly as high as 100 million, making it one of the deadliest epidemics in human history.

SARS (CHINA) = caused an eventual 8,098 cases, resulting in 774 deaths reported in 17 countries

EBOLA (AFRICA) = which occurred from December 2013 to January 2016, with 28,646 cases and 11,323 deaths.

MERS-CoV (MIDDLE EAST)
= 1 465 cases of Middle East Respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) and between 300 and 500 deaths

H1N1 (USA) = occured in 2009; CDC estimated that 151,700-575,400 people worldwide died.. estimated that 11–21% of the global population at the time — or around 700 million–1.4 billion people (out of a total of 6.8 billion) — contracted the illness
