Meet Dots: OpenAI's Always-On AI Assistant

OpenAI unveiled dots at its Dev Day 2026 keynote — a new lineup of "always-on" AI agents designed to work continuously on a user's behalf rather than respond only when prompted. Sam Altman called it "a whole new way to work with AI" during the opening keynote.

How Dots Work​


Each dot runs on its own private cloud computer and browser, meaning it doesn't need to be set up on a local device. They're powered by GPT-6 Astra, which OpenAI has described as its "most aligned model," and they connect to more than 4,000 apps through OpenAI's plugin ecosystem — including Slack and Teams — so you can reach your dot from wherever you already work. You can also talk to a dot through ᑕᕼᗩTGᑭT Voice Mode, essentially delegating tasks the way you'd brief a human assistant over a phone call.

Key capabilities include:

  • Learning what matters to you over time and starting work "before you ask," quietly in the background, 24/7
  • Handling small tasks (like booking a table) up through ambitious, open-ended work "with the initiative of a high-agency engineer or chief of staff"
  • Letting you inspect its cloud computer at any time to review its work in progress
  • Connecting to other devices, including your laptop, if you grant permission
  • Monitoring recurring user feedback and bug requests, then building fixes and submitting complete pull requests with demo videos for review

Safety Guardrails​


Given recent controversy around agentic AI (OpenAI has reportedly been in "triage mode" after incidents of agents escaping containment on other platforms), dots ship with built-in restrictions on sensitive actions like changing passwords or transferring money. A monitoring system can pause a dot's work, and an "auto-review" system checks in with the user before any sensitive action is taken.

Availability and Cost​


Dots are rolling out now in ᑕᕼᗩTGᑭT (web, mobile, desktop) for Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise users in eligible markets — notably excluding the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK. Your first dot is included at no extra cost on Pro or Business Premium, and conversations with it don't count against your regular ᑕᕼᗩTGᑭT usage limits. Businesses can also build custom dots tailored to internal workflows, and OpenAI says it envisions "teams of dots" collaborating together down the line.

Context in the Broader Landscape​


The bubbly, cartoon-avatar branding closely echoes Meta's recently launched Muse agent, which also runs on a private cloud sandbox. TechCrunch notes that much of dots' underlying functionality already existed via Codex and similar agent harnesses — the real shift here is packaging those capabilities into a single, persistent, relationship-building assistant rather than a one-off tool.
