In Tajikistan, Sumanak/Sumalak is associated with a traditional communal cooking practice. The dish is particularly connected with springtime and is prepared collectively rather than simply being made as an ordinary household meal. Preparing it can bring relatives, neighbors, and community members together.

The cooking process involves shared work and social interaction, making the preparation itself part of the tradition. Knowledge about how it is prepared is passed between generations.

UNESCO inscribed the Culture of Sumanak/Sumalak cooking in 2025. The tradition shows how cooking can become a major social event rather than merely a way to prepare food.
