Note: This was a reply in one of the discussions here, but I think it's worth sharing as an entire discussion

Don't you think we, as Filipino citizens, can't do better than this? Yes, madumi ang politika sa lahat ng bansa, but the Philippines is among the most corrupt countries; 125 Million is still no joke, especially for a (sorry for the European effect) country considered third-world.

Hindi dahil nakasanayan ay hindi na mababago. Devils always start small, kahit pa sabihin mong lesser evil, keyword is still evil. Masama pa rin. And really, do you think these corrupt politicians, especially those that took trillions (say, the Villars and the Marcoses), really start as the devil they are? Marcos Sr. started as a golden child—UP Law Graduate, one-take bar, had the support of the masses, but what happened? He turned into one of the most evil Filipinos to be ever alive. His thesis paper when he took law studied the possible conditions where Martial Law can be legally declared, the circumstances where one can legally put an entire country in their palms. It doesn't look evil at first, just an innocent paper, just a potentially good, but equally potentially evil one, but it ended up causing one of the darkest periods in Philippine history. Sa ibang bansa, take Adolf the Austrian Painter. He seemed innocent. An art-loving gentleman who for some reason hated the jews. Racist and bad, but not much extreme, not until people started supporting his cause, not until people saw something that's morally incorrect as just. Even angels can turn into extreme evils, what more those that already have a history of being evil?

On the flip side, look at, say, Indonesia, they weren't always as advanced as they are now. Corruption is still a thing, but they've reduced it to extents where they now. KPK, though had had issues, was able to eradicate corruption to such great extents during their 2003 ~ 2019 run, and I was there to witness them in their prime. Come 2020, though short-lived due to COVID-19, they became an upper-middle income group, right after KPKs golden era. 16 years did them well, so it's certainly not impossible to change.

Hindi naman talaga mabilis baguhin ang sirang sistema, alam nating lahat 'yan, but it's not fair nor logically correct to just settle with what we have. We shouldn't settle for lesser evil. We have lots of Filipinos that would do good in public offices, some of them are probably just students now. The more time we let pass and the more terms we give to these politicians who you say are lesser evil, we let them incubate to be worse. We directly consent them to be evil, basta may makikitang mabuti.

Please, just for once, try to consider these ideas.

Let me use UP's motto—Honor, Excellence, Service. May dangal ba? Marangal ba ang ideolohiya? Wala bang kasamaan sa pakay? Kasama nito, mahusay ba? Matalino?

I hear you.

Exactly my warning. Again, hindi instant, but a long time learning process that should be started now. This in itself is the plan—huwag maging panatiko.

Iyong sabi mo na madalas dalawa lang, that's the very problem in itself. All you have to do is ti refuse that ideology, to vote who you think is rightful for the position, hindi iyong sa tingin mo ay mananalo o may chance na manalo, that's the plan, to spread that ideology and break the very thought that had produced hundreds of corrupt leaders. That's the action you can do next election. That's the 'plan' that you could perhaps spread to the people around you.

And as an individual, the only thing you need to do is to break away from the ideologies that you've been accustomed to, na mas kikilalakin lang ang mga kilala instead of actually considering all candidates. Then, after you do, spread the word. Sa Pilipinas ka lang naman makakakita ng ganiyan karaming mga nakabalandrang mukha ng politiko, so tell those around you to reconsider who they'll vote for, kung 'yong kakilala lang ba nila ang pamimilian.

Lastly, your very last statement. Kung gusto mo ng pagbabago, learn also how to break free. We here can give you concrete actions to beat corruption, such as those I wrote above, but you must also have the grit to strive for change, na baguhin ang sarili, ang ideolohiya, and magpalaya sa ibang pag-iisip, ang magsalita.

Our history had had multiple cases of this, the Tuba revolution, for example, was caused by an ******* tax the Spanish imposed. It can be that simple if we stop thinking about the names of people in the government, but rather what they'd done to us.

If you want change, look into your ideologies, change yourself, perhaps, then after that, encourage others to do the same, spread the word. That's the plan.

Unfortunately, knowing is not enough. Jinggoy won in the elections again despite his 2-time streak of having corruption issues, Marcos Jr. won despite his family's long-standing corruption mania, the Villars, still seating in their thrones despite the decades of corruption trails they left. EDSA Tres was partly triggered by former president Erap's supporter, despite there being many evidences against his corruption case. It's true, lots of people know which of the officials are corrupt, but it doesn't automatically mean they won't win. Just like you said, they use various tactics to prolong their stays, like how Duterte's supporters stay blinded by propaganda, of the fake promises left by the Dutertes.

But ultimately, it's still for the people to decide who sits where. That's why we call for change. The only way for the system to change is for people to change, for voters to consider the moral and intellectual properties of the leaders they choose. Hangga't may mali, mag-ingay, lumaban.

Indeed, we should strive to know more, not just what's right, but also what's wrong. For this, though, we must also mobilize ourselves and speak up for the betterment of the Filipino people. Mapagpalaya ang katotohanan, kaya't hanggang kayang isiwalat ang mali, magsalita.
