Google's annual developer conference took center stage on May 19–20, 2026, and it was arguably the most consequential I/O in years. The message was unmistakable: Google is done playing catch-up. With a sweeping set of announcements spanning AI models, always-on agents, hardware, and developer tools, Google declared the start of the "agentic Gemini era" — a shift from AI that helps you think to AI that helps you act. Here's everything that was announced.

New Gemini Models

Gemini 3.5 Flash launched today as the new default model across the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search — it's 4x faster than other frontier models, rivals large flagships for coding, and excels at agentic tasks. Gemini 3.5 Pro follows next month. Alongside these, Google introduced the Gemini Omni family — a video-first multimodal model capable of generating "anything from any input," with the first model, Omni Flash, available today for ρáíd subscribers in the Gemini app, Google Flow, and YouTube Shorts.

Always-On AI Agents

  • Gemini Spark — A 24/7 personal AI agent running on Google Cloud VMs in the background; handles email drafting, study guides, credit card monitoring, and integrates with Gmail, Sheets, Slides, Cαиνα, and Instacart; macOS local file access also planned
  • Daily Brief — A Gemini app agent that pulls from your Google services to build a personalized daily overview
  • Android Halo — A dedicated hub for all AI agents on Android, arriving later this year
  • Information Agents in Search — Continuously monitors the web for updates on ongoing research queries; rolling out this summer for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers

Google Search Redesign

The Search box is completely redesigned with an expanding input field and AI-generated suggestions that go well beyond autocomplete. Generative UI in Search can produce interactive tables, graphs, simulations, and mini "apps" for complex tasks like event planning. AI Mode is upgraded with Gemini 3.5 Flash and now includes agentic capabilities like Antigravity integration for real-time coding demos directly in Search results.

Antigravity 2.0

Google's Antigravity 2.0 is a direct Claude Code competitor and agent-first development platform. In a keynote demo, it coded an entire OS including a Doom clone for under $1,000 in tokens. It's available to download today, and Android app building via AI Studio — complete with an integrated emulator and direct Play Store publishing — also launched.

Gemini App Redesign

The Gemini app received a new design language called "Neural E×ρréššive" featuring fresh animations, vibrant colors, and haptic feedback. It now supports additional regional dialects, and Gemini Omni is live inside the app today for ρáíd subscribers.

Workspace Updates

  • Gmail Live — Voice-activated inbox management; ask Gemini a question verbally and get a direct answer, not a list of threads
  • Docs Live — Voice-driven document creation, rolling out this summer
  • Google Pics — A new Workspace app for iterative AI image editing powered by Nano Banana 2 and Gemini; supports natural language edits on selected regions, with all outputs watermarked via SynthID
  • AI features also coming to Google Keep, pulling context from Drive and Gmail

Shopping

Universal Cart is a cross-merchant AI shopping cart that follows you across Google Search, YouTube, and Gmail. It supports retailers including Target, Walmart, Ulta Beauty, Sephora, Wayfair, Nike, and Shopify — all checked out simultaneously — and monitors for price drops, back-in-stock alerts, and part incompatibilities. Launching in Search this summer, with YouTube and Gmail to follow.

YouTube & Entertainment

  • Ask YouTube — Compiles answers from across videos to directly answer your questions; coming to the US this summer
  • Google Flow Music — Upload a recording and prompt Gemini to generate additional musical elements
  • Gemini Omni Flash is also live inside YouTube Shorts for AI-assisted video generation

Hardware & XR

  • Audio Glasses — Google's first wearable frames, built with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, powered by Android XR and Gemini with Google Maps navigation built in; launching this fall, works with both Android and iOS
  • Project Aura (updated) — XR glasses developed with Xreal, featuring Gemini display widgets, Calendar and Keep integrations, and improved in-lens Gemini performance
  • Wear OS 7 — Next major smartwatch update with deeper Gemini/Nano integration and smart glasses ecosystem support

Google Beam (Project Starline)

Formerly Project Starline, Google Beam is now testing lifelike AI video agents. A demo featured "Sophie," a Beam video agent designed to make AI interactions feel more human during calls. Group calling via Beam is also in testing and will be compatible with Google Meet and Zoom.

SynthID & AI Safety

Google's AI watermarking tech SynthID is now being adopted by OpenAI and Nvidia, and Google reaffirmed its commitment to the C2PA standard for AI content authenticity. All image outputs from Google Pics are watermarked at generationk.

Science & Climate

WeatherNext, a DeepMind hurricane forecasting model, was spotlighted under the Gemini for Science initiative. DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis also made headlines by stating that AGI is "just a few years away" and that "we are standing in the foothills of the singularity".

Pricing

  • New AI Ultra plan: $100/month
  • Previous $250/month plan drops to $200/month

The Takeaway

Google I/O 2026 felt less like a product showcase and more like a declaration of intent. Google is weaving Gemini into every surface it owns — search, email, docs, shopping, hardware, and entertainment — and betting that the future of computing is AI agents working quietly in the background on your behalf. With Gemini Spark running 24/7, Antigravity challenging the developer tool landscape, and Audio Glasses hitting shelves this fall, the gap between Google's AI ambitions and everyday reality is closing fast. The agentic era isn't coming — it's already here.
