What Is Muse Spark?

Muse Spark is Meta's most powerful AI model to date and the first model released by Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). It was built over nine months from a complete ground-up rebuild of Meta's AI stack — new infrastructure, new architecture, and new data pipelines. Previously codenamed "Avocado," it marks a significant strategic shift for Meta.

Who Built It?

MSL is led by Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale AI, whom Meta brought on after investing $14.3 billion for a 49% stake in Scale AI. Zuckerberg restructured Meta's AI efforts reportedly because he was unhappy with how Llama models lagged behind OpenAI and Anthropic.

Key Technical Capabilities

  • Natively multimodal — supports visual chain of thought, tool-use, and multi-agent orchestration
  • Thinking/Contemplating mode — scales parallel agents to tackle complex problems without drastically increasing latency
  • Thought compression — RL training with a thinking-time penalty causes the model to solve problems in fewer tokens, a major efficiency win at Meta's scale
  • 10x compute efficiency — reaches Llama 4 Maverick-level capability with over 10x less compute
  • Benchmarks place it in the top 5 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, competitive with Gemini Deep Think and GPT Pro

Closed Model — A Big Departure

Unlike Meta's open-source Llama models, Muse Spark is a closed model — its design and code will not be made public. However, it will be available for free to Meta's 3+ billion users and offered via private API preview to select partners, with open-source future versions potentially planned.

Rollout & Privacy Notes

Muse Spark currently powers the Meta AI app and meta.ai, with rollout coming to WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and Meta AI glasses. Users must log in with an existing Meta account, raising potential privacy concerns about whether personal social data could be used by the AI — though Meta hasn't explicitly confirmed this.

The Bigger Picture

This is Meta's declaration that it's back in the frontier AI race. The Muse series follows a deliberate scaling approach — each generation validates the last before going bigger — and the next generation is already in development.
