Meet GPT-6 Sol and Luna, two models that bring frontier intelligence to everyday work with different balances of capability andcost.
The Announcement
OpenAI released two new models, GPT‑6 Sol and GPT‑6 Luna, on September 22, 2026, extending the GPT‑6 generation that started with GPT‑6 Astra earlier that month. These are lower-cost, more efficient siblings to Astra rather than a new flagship — OpenAI frames them as a way to "distribute the benefits" of Astra's intelligence gains at cheaper price points.
What Each Model Is For
- GPT‑6 Sol: Built for everyday, complex work like coding and reasoning-heavy tasks, trained with methods similar to Astra to inherit its gains in professional work, factuality, coding, computer use, and alignment.
- GPT‑6 Luna: The cheapest, fastest tier — meant for high-volume, clear-goal tasks like summarizing documents, extracting info, or quick Q&A.
On OpenAI's internal factuality benchmark (based on flagged real-world mistakes), GPT‑6 Sol reportedly makes about half as many errors as its predecessor GPT‑5.6 Sol, reaching "Astra-level reliability at much lower cost". Both models also adopt Astra's simplified communication style — less jargon, fewer low-value details.
Pricing Cut by 50%
OpenAI attributes the cuts to improved caching and inference efficiency, and says it's passing those savings straight to users and API customers.
Availability
- Rolling out today in ᑕᕼᗩTGᑭT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users.
- Free and Go users get GPT‑6 Luna via the desktop app only.
- Both models are not yet in Chat mode (the general ᑕᕼᗩTGᑭT chat interface) — that rollout is expected to follow gradually.
- Available now in the API as
gpt-6-solandgpt-6-luna.
Overall, GPT‑6 Luna's low cost and speed could be handy for quick batch tasks (summarizing sources, drafting hooks), while Sol's coding/reasoning strength suits more complex prompt-engineering or tutorial-writing work if you're using the API or Codex.
