1. Was Duterte's arrest îllégâl?
--> No. It was supposed to be yes, but Duterte himself withdrew the Philippines from the Rome Statute in March 2019. This means that the Rome Statute no longer applies to the Philippines since then.

2. Why does the ICC still meddle with crimes in the Philippines despite its withdrawal from the Rome Statute?
--> The ICC retains jurisdiction over crimes committed before the withdrawal. The ICC has the legal right to prosecute Duterte for crimes that happen before March 2019.

3. Why does Duterte invoke Article 59 of the Rome Statute to claim that his arrest was îllégâl?
--> Because this is his last clear chance to avoid accountability for the crimes committed during his WOD.

So, why attempt to invoke this right?
MY OPINION: Duterte, once again, is trying to play his card by toying with the laws that govern countries, including the Philippines and its citizens.
