It is axiomatic that the power of legislative investigation includes the power to compel the attendance of witnesses. To consider summon as having been “duly” issued, the inquiry or investigation, which the person...
Ayala Alabang Village bans Chinese POGO tenants
MANILA, Philippines — An exclusive village in Muntinlupa City will suspend the issuance of lease agreements and move-in permits for mainland Chinese tenants beginning Oct. 1. The Ayala Alabang Village Association (AAVA) board of governors issued a resolution on Aug. 31, suspending the renewal of existing permits for households accommodating Chinese tenants. The AVVA said the “unprecedented move” was in response to “incessant number of violations” by Chinese tenants said to be employed in Philippine offshore gaming operator (POGO) outlets. The Chinese tenants violated the board’s resolution, which provides that residences in the village should be exclusively used for residential purposes by only one family, the AVVA said. The...
5 doctors fully vaccinated with Sinovac hospitalized for severe COVID-19
MANILA, Philippines — Five more doctors who treated COVID-19 patients in different Metro Manila hospitals were themselves admitted for severe breakthrough infections, said an infectious diseases specialist who is part of the government’s experts panel. Dr. Rontgene Solante, also an officer of the Philippine College of Physicians, did not identify the five physicians, but he said they were fully vaccinated with Sinovac. Solante has stressed in earlier media appearances that vaccines are known to wane through time, but he said a study in Thailand suggests that Sinovac becomes weaker sooner than others and should soon be followed by booster shots. He said he was only coming out with this information to appeal for prayers for the...

Third Person Dies After Receiving Contaminated Moderna Vaccine
A third person in Japan has died after receiving a Moderna COVID-19 jab from a vaccine batch that was found to be contaminated with stainless steel. Moderna and its Japanese distributor, Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, told Newsweek in a joint statement "there is no indication" the deaths were linked to the administration of the vaccine and were working with health officials in the country to investigate the incidents. On August 26, Takeda announced the suspension of three vaccine lots, totaling 1.63 million doses, after reports that a foreign particulate had been found in vials. An investigation found fragments of stainless steel in some vials in one lot, which Moderna and Takeda said were most likely related to the friction between...

And to both these facts for the day, people on the Internet E×ρréššed their disbelief: "Tapos GCQ," which started trending on Monday evening. It's a pretty specific phrase which you don't usually see on Twitter; but given the situation, it's totally understandable. For one, the daily tally of 20,000++ cases is fast becoming the norm. We first hit the number on August 30, when 22,366 cases...

Easy policy lays out a hard road for underperforming peso, baht
The Thai baht and the Philippine peso have lagged all their Southeast Asian peers this year. This may continue as inflation readings could reinforce their central banks as two of the biggest doves in the region. Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas is weighing a reduction in the reserve requirement ratio while some members of the Bank of Thailand’s policy committee see a need for another rate cut. This easy stance is at odds with that of policy makers elsewhere which are preparing to unwind stimulus deployed to counter the fallout from outbreak. The baht and the peso are among Asia’s most vulnerable currencies given that their nations are highly dependent on cash generated from abroad — tourism for Thailand and remittances for the Philippines...

BSP helps 70-year-old ice delivery man recover nearly P50K-worth of termite-*******ed savings
kmjs The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Wednesday said it recently facilitated the replacement of nearly P50,000-worth of hard-earned yet termite-*******ed savings of a 70-year-old ice delivery man. In a statement, the BSP recalled how Adonis Buemia, who has been delivering ice for a living for 30 years, was able to buy a house, a brand-new tricycle, and even save close to P50,000 from his P300 daily income. Despite being a solo parent and a primary caregiver to a special child, the central bank said Buemia managed to save P100 or one-third of his daily income, which he tucked away inside a cabinet in his home. However, his savings almost disintegrated in the cabinet after termites feasted on them. Desperate to save his...
