very time we write a story about EDSA Busway violators, there’s always the nagging thought that the penalties for driving illegally in the bus lane should be higher—because P1,000 per apprehension won’t be enough to deter repeat offenders with deep pockets, anyway.
Well, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), via MMDA Regulation No. 23-002, has now increased the fines for EDSA Bus Carousel violators, whether they’re in public or private vehicles. Check them out below:

MANILA, Philippines — Seventeen Filipino seafarers were among the individuals taken hostage after Yemen’s Houthi rebels seized an Israeli-linked cargo ship in the Red Sea, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Wednesday.
Houthi rebels captured the cargo vessel Galaxy Leader and held hostage its 25 international crew, including 17 Filipinos, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega said in an interview with GMA News.

The Philippines is a country that consists of more than 7,000 islands, making it challenging to provide internet connectivity and other telecommunication services to its people. To address this problem, the Philippines has launched and acquired several satellites over the years, the first of which was Agila.
What is Agila?
Agila is the name given to two satellites that were owned and operated by the Philippine company Mabuhay Satellite Corporation, a subsidiary of PLDT. The name Agila means "eagle" in Filipino, and is also the local name for the Philippine eagle, the national bird of the country.

Price cap on rice only 'temporary', NEDA says after stakeholders air concern

MANILA — The National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) on Sunday sought to allay stakeholders' concerns on the rice price ceiling, which it said was only temporary.
President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. set the price cap for regular milled rice at P41 per kilo and for well-milled rice at P45 a kilo. This will take effect on September 5, the Palace said.
NEDA Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said Marcos' executive order on the price ceiling was not a standalone measure to lower rice prices.

MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) will again extend the validity of driver’s licenses that will expire in November onwards to April 2024 amid a legal hurdle involving its plastic card contract.
In an advisory, the LTO said that holders of driver’s licenses issued between April and June should have these renewed before the end of the year.
“Failure of the driver to renew his or her driver’s license beyond the prescribed schedule shall render the license expired and incur a corresponding penalty,” it said in a memorandum.

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Labor and Employment on Sunday reminded employers of the proper payment of wages for workers who will report to work on the upcoming holidays.
In an interview with Radyo 630, DOLE Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said that October 30, November 1 and 2 are special non-working holidays, which means the "no work, no pay" rule will be applied.

Metro Manila — The Department of National Defense (DND) is urging its personnel, including the 120,000-strong armed forces, to refrain from using apps on digital portraits using artificial intelligence (AI).
In a memorandum issued on Oct. 14, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. described the viral image generator app as posing privacy and security risks.
