GPT-6.1 Sol: OpenAI's Cheaper, Near-Astra Model​


OpenAI unveiled GPT‑6.1 Sol on September 29, 2026, at its DevDay event in San Francisco — an upgrade to GPT‑6 Sol released just one week after that model itself launched. CEO Sam Altman pitched it as delivering "near-Astra intelligence" on agentic coding, computer use, and professional work at roughly one-fifth the price of the flagship GPT‑6 Astra model, calling it a future "daily workhorse" that's "smarter than Astra in some ways" for certain tasks.

Pricing and specs​


  • API pricing: $2 per million input tokens, $10 per million output tokens, and just $0.10 per million cached input tokens — a 95% discount versus standard input and 50% cheaper than GPT‑6 Sol's cached rate.
  • Context window: 1.05 million tokens, with responses up to 128,000 tokens.
  • Tooling: web and file search, code interpretation, hosted shell/computer use, image generation, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) support, accessible via OpenAI's Responses API with function calling and structured outputs.

Performance claims​


On DeepSWE v1.1, a real-codebase software-engineering benchmark, OpenAI says GPT‑6.1 Sol matches Astra's score at about one-fifth the cost, while beating GPT‑6 Sol's best result by 6.4 percentage points even at lower reasoning effort. Factual-accuracy testing showed the error rate on difficult prompts dropping from 11.4% (GPT‑6 Sol) to 7.7% at low reasoning effort — roughly a 32% reduction — with the new model's error rate staying within 1.9 percentage points of Astra's across settings. OpenAI also says it's more reliable about flagging broken tools, honoring explicit restrictions, and avoiding unauthorized actions than its predecessor.

Availability​


The model rolled out immediately to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users in ᑕᕼᗩTGᑭT Work and Codex, and to developers via the API as gpt-6.1-sol. It is not yet available in the standard ᑕᕼᗩTGᑭT chat interface.

Context in the GPT-6 family​


This launch caps a rapid cadence: GPT‑6 Astra (the flagship) arrived in April 2026, GPT‑5.6 in July, GPT‑6 Sol and Luna in late September, and now GPT‑6.1 Sol just a week later — reflecting OpenAI's push to push frontier-level performance down the cost curve for everyday agentic work. The DevDay event also introduced new AI agent tools branded "Dots" alongside the model.
