Highlife developed in Ghana and became an influential part of West African musical culture. The tradition combines music and dance and has evolved through different generations and musical styles. It has been performed in social gatherings, celebrations, and other community settings.
Rather than remaining frozen in one historical form, Highlife has continued to change as musicians introduce new instruments and influences.
UNESCO recognized Highlife music and dance as intangible cultural heritage in 2025. Its history demonstrates how a cultural tradition can remain recognizable while continuously adapting to new generations.
