Before filling a pot, place an unused paper coffee filter over the drainage hole.
The filter can help keep loose potting mix from immediately washing through while still allowing excess water to drain.
It will eventually break down, so it isn't a permanent substitute for proper potting materials.
The drainage hole should always remain functional rather than being sealed completely.
