One doormat doesn't have to handle both mud and water.
Place a suitable coarse scraping mat first to remove larger dirt and debris, followed by an absorbent indoor mat to catch remaining moisture.
This creates two stages before wet footwear reaches the main floor.
During rainy season, separating the jobs of scraping and absorbing can work better than expecting one mat to do everything.
