Graphite can act as a dry lubricant for certain mechanical locks.
Instead of applying cooking oil or other greasy household liquids—which can collect dirt—lock-specific dry lubricants are generally preferable. In a temporary situation, graphite designed for locks can reduce friction without leaving an oily residue.
Avoid forcing a key that is severely stuck, since it can break inside the cylinder.
The important trick isn't adding more force; it's reducing friction using the appropriate material.
