My main Facebook account, was häçked. I have had my facebook account since January 31, 2014, making it 10 years old now. During this time, I have not experienced significant häçking issues, as I could easily recover my account and was confident in its security due to various Facebook account authorization methods.
On August 1, 2024, around 6 pm, I was notified that my account was häçked. I wondered how the häçker managed to access my email to connect to my Facebook for authorization and password changes, and then remove my email associated with my Facebook account and change it to theirs.
They should not be successful, even if they know my login details, because Facebook easily notifies me when unknown devices attempt to log in to my account. I have set it up to alert me unless I have approved the login or if the device is on my list of trusted devices.
I'm careful about clicking links and can easily spot phishing attempts. In my case, I suspect that the häçker gained access to my account by injecting malicious software onto my desktop, which allowed them to log or access both my personal email and Facebook, as my desktop is always connected to the internet and left open. This hindered me to recover it quickly, as they also had control over it and by seconds setting up different authorization and fully häçk it and make it as their own.
I went through the recovery process, confirmed my identity by sending valid IDs from my frequently used device, and got an email that I could now get back into my account with a provided link and temporary password. However, this just directed me to the same page, and the recovery code provided was not working for reasons unknown to me. Due to too many attempts, my account was marked as spam and temporarily banned on Facebook, requiring me to try again the next day. The next day, after many attempts, I was able to change my password. Despite having a new password that the häçkers couldn't access, Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) popped up, asking for a code only the häçker knew.
This process repeated, and I didn't know what to do except to keep following the recovery process and give my best effort to have my account returned.
Fortunately, I came across Reddit, where I found forums with many users experiencing the same problems with 2FA after successfully changing their passwords and attempting to log in. The issues were also caused by häçking incidents. Some users had successfully recovered their accounts with different methods but after weeks, months, or even years, while others had given up and created new accounts. I read about Oculus on this Reddit forum, a virtual reality product produced by META. Apparently, purchasing such products grants access to Facebook support to help recover your account and bypass 2FA. I have no way to pay for it; I just want to learn more about it. I searched for it and navigated directly to the "Meta Quest Facebook Help Center." Before accessing their support center, I needed to log in, and magically, my account was recovered. The meta account login required me to open my Facebook, and with my changed password and email, I was able to bypass the 2FA. I removed the häçker's email from my account, turned off 2FA, and re-enabled it using Google Authenticator. I also secured my account with recovery codes, SMS, and WhatsApp authorization. This method worked for me.
This experience made me realize that why even the government can be häçked despite having many cybersecurity personnel. Cybersecurity is crucial, and we must never be complacent, as vulnerabilities exist for every internet user, big or small.
In the end, I was lucky to recover my account within two days. I hope this raises awareness for everyone to be careful about what we install and do on the internet. Secure your social media accounts to protect important memories, data, and privacy.
