Here's a preview of a possible OpenWrt build for the Evoluzn FX-ID3. The build still needs a lot of fixing and polishing to do, but the fundamental wired and wireless network functions work normally, with some PA issue on the wireless side.

If you wish to help to get this into production-ready state, and you know something of Linux and porting devices into OpenWrt, then perhaps you could contribute with the following needed information for this particular model:

• GPIO mappings for the LEDs and buttons
• interrupting u-boot to disable, or ρá†ch if unable to do so, flash image 1 and 2 checking and recovery
• modem activation

Please note that the installation of this firmware will be like MF286RA. Even though based on OpenWrt devices like R051 and R281, the flash layout is different, so you can't simply scp the image to the router and sysupgrade there.

You need to load the initramfs kernel via tftp then sysupgrade from there. This means you need to interrupt the boot sequence from u-boot, which means mandatory serial access via USB to TTL. I recommend CP2102 based USB-TTL serial converters.

The build is already good for use as a router, but not as an LTE modem. The module is still inoperable, and even if it becomes operational, there is still the issue of the need to find the correct AT commands sequence for this particular modem to activate data connection.

There is also the issue of the bootloader that restricts the use of the flash storage to half of the full 16MB for installation of additional packages. Minus the system, there is more or less 2MB remaining for additional packages.

But it's not all that bad, considering that:

• this brings the device to modern kernel and userpace from Linux 2.6 to 5.10
• the wireless range of this device is impressive, even when txpower is set to 17dBm (50mW) out of the full 20dBm (100mW)
• you get OpenWrt mainline support with all the bells and whistles to customize it to your needs

Of course bear in mind that the device hardware still has its limits. This doesn't magically make it do things beyond its performance capacity. But with 128MB of DDR2 memory, it should be enough for the basic needs.

I wonder how many would be interested in a test build, before I upstream the device. Do note that installing this would mean that the you can no longer use the unit as a modem, but as a router or repeater.

This it not permanent however, as you can still go back to stock if you wish.
