Ever since 1999, Chevy's big SUVs have been offered with a gas-guzzling V8 engine as standard. But with the introduction of the new You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. Log in or register now., the two big SUVs will be available with a diesel power unit once again.

At launch, Chevrolet said that the new Suburban and Tahoe will be available with the following engine options: a 5.3-liter V8 producing 355 PS and 519 Nm torque, a 6.2-liter V8 option making 420 PS and 623 Nm, and the new 3.0-liter inline-six turbodiesel good for 277 PS and 623 Nm torque. They did not disclose, however, fuel economy details. Chevy said that out of the three, the diesel is the most fuel-efficient. No surprises there, but care to guess how much fuel they guzzle - or sip?

According to Chevrolet, the Tahoe with the new 3.0-liter diesel can do an EPA-estimated 11.9 km/L on the highway and 8.9 km/L in the city. Good, right? But, these figures are for the rear-wheel-drive variant only. The four-wheel-drive variants will only do 11.0 km/L highway, 8.5 km/L city, and 9.3 km/L combined. Interestingly, the same figures are claimed for the longer Suburban.

These numbers might be very low compared to other vehicles on the market. But do remember that the Tahoe and Suburban are full-size SUVs that are very big and very heavy. Compared to the previous-generation models with a gas-guzzling V8 engine, the new SUVs are also much more fuel-efficient, well, at least with the turbodiesel powertrain.

With You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. Log in or register now., we might just see the turbodiesel powerplant arrive along with the V8 motors. As to when that will be, we still don't know. One thing is for sure though, with Metro Manila traffic, don't expect to see your new Suburban or Tahoe doing Chevrolet's claimed fuel economy figures of 8.9 km/L.
