Juan F. Nakpil
First National Artist for Architecture (May 15, 1973)
May 26, 1899 – May 7, 1986 (Aged 86)

Juan F. Nakpil was born on May 26, 1899, son of Julio Nakpil and Gregoria de Jesús. He was married to Anita Agoncillo Noble. Nakpil died on May 7, 1986 at the age of 86.

Nakpil is an architect, teacher, and also civic leader. He is a pioneer and innovator in Philippine Architecture and regarded as the Dean of Filipino Architects. Nakpil’s greatest contribution is his belief that there is such a thing as Philippine Architecture. Due to his zealous representation and efforts that private Filipino architects and engineers, by law, are now able to participate in the design and execution of government projects.

Nakpil designed the 1937 International Eucharistic Congress altar and in 1930, he rebuilt and enlarged the Quiapo Church by adding a dome and a second belfry to the original design.
