Mobile phones today are more powerful and versatile thanks to touchscreens but have become sensitive and fragile compared to those in the past. Drop your old Nokia a few times and they still work perfectly. Do that to a smartphone today and the touchscreen is bound to crack. Or shatter.

Land Rover, however, wants to make modern smartphones built with the same toughness as their SUVs. Yes, Land Rover, the British automaker is delving into smartphones.

The British marque recently launched the Explore R, a new device that “is a rugged smartphone inspired by the resilience of the Land Rover Defender.”

Made for the tough out-door environments, Land Rover ensured that the Explore R is very durable. The company says the phone has been drop tested at heights of 1.8-meters and is fully waterproof up to 1.5-meters for 35 minutes. With IP68 and MIL SPEC 810H protection, the phone is also dust and sand proof. Meanwhile, the 3,100mAh battery can last up to 1.5 days, even with medium-to-heavy usage.

Although it is made to be durable, Land Rover didn’t scrimp on specs. It features a 5.7-inch HD+, 18x9 display that has been optimized for outdoor use by offering better visibility. It is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6 and can be used even while your fingers are wet or wearing gloves. The device itself runs on Android 9 but is upgradeable to the newer Android 10. It comes with 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage that is expandable with a microSD card. A Sony 12-megapixel dual camera has been fitted at the rear and an 8-megapixel one in front.

The Land Rover Explore R is now You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. It would be perfect too if you happen to go overland frequently.

Still, the big question remains. Is it tough as a Nokia?
