The modem receives the internet from the ISP while router aka wireless gateway is responsible for broadcasting the wifi. But some of the latest modems are already wifi capable so no need to have a separate device or router like netgear 2824g. If your modem is wifi capable already then no need to install wireless gateway it doesn't help.
