Italy is set to lock down at least 16 million people in the region of Lombardy and in 11 other provinces in the north and east of the country.

The mandatory quarantine will last until early April.

The dramatic escalation in the country's efforts to contain the new deadly coronavirus will close gyms, pools, museums and ski resorts.

Italy is Europe's worst-hit country and reported a steep rise in virus infections on Saturday.

The new measures, which also apply to financial centre Milan and tourist hotspot Venice, could take effect as early as Sunday and will last until 3 April.

Based on DOH’s statistics, patient number 11 or “PH 11” is a 72-year-old man, who neither had recent travels to countries affected by COVID-19 nor had any contact with an infected person. The patient manifested “cough with co-morbidity” and is now confined in The Medical City in Ortigas. DOH said it is still validating the date when his symptom started.

The 12th case or “PH 12” is a 56-year-old man who traveled lately to the United Arab Emirates. He began having fever and cough on February 9.

“PH 13” is a 34-year-old male who traveled to Australia and started having fever on February 28.

“PH 14” is a 46-year-old male who had no recent travel history abroad but exhibited fever and cough since February 25.

“PH 15” is another male who started coughing on March 1. DOH said it has yet to determine if the 24-year-old has just traveled to countries affected by COVID-19.

Patient numbers 12 to 15 are admitted to the Makati Medical Center, DOH noted.

“PH 16” is a 70-year-old male who had an exposure to an identified carrier of the virus. He began experiencing cough, sore throat, and colds on March 1.

Similarly, “PH 17” had been exposed to another infected person. The 69-year-old female’s COVID-19 symptoms – cough and colds – started to manifest also on March 1.

DOH said PH 16 and PH 17 are currently getting medical attention at Unihealth Parañaque Hospital.

Meanwhile, “PH 18” and “PH 19” are now confined in Trinity Medical Center in Pasig City.

PH 18 is a 41-year-old male, who started having fever, headache, and body malaise on February 26 after traveling to Taiwan.

PH 19, on the other hand, is a 46-year-old female who had no recent travel history to virus-hit countries. DOH said the onset of her COVID-19 symptoms is still “under investigation.”

As for “PH 20”, the health agency said the 48-year-old male recently traveled to Japan and on February 29 exhibited cough and body malaise. He is currently being treated at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine in Muntinlupa City.
