Malacañang on Monday E×ρréššed alarm over the fatal poisoning of several people due to lambanog ahead of the Christmas break.
At least eight people initially died in Rizal town in Laguna while several individuals have been hospitalized in Laguna and Quezon after drinking lambanog or palm liquor.
Earlier in the day, Rizal Mayor Vener Muñoz said an additional three people died after drinking lambanog.
In Malacañang, presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo said: “The Palace E×ρréššes alarm over the reported cases of lambanog poisoning in Laguna and Quezon.”
Ethanol ‘“ is used to create the intoxicating effects found in *******ic beverages. It is also used as an alternate form of fuel and is most often created from sugarcane or corn. In the United States, certain cars are designed to take 85% ethanol fuels. It is also found in rocket fuels. It has antiseptic properties and is found in anti-bacterial wipes and hand gels. It is also the base of many paints and perfumes because it is a good solvent.
Methanol ‘“ is mostly used to create other chemicals such as formaldehyde. It is also a desirable fuel for race and stunt cars because it is less flammable than gasoline and can be put out with water. Small quantities are used to produce denatured ******* and it can also be found as a solvent.
Most ethanol is produced using a four-step process:
The ethanol feedstock (crops or plants) are ground up for easier processing;
Sugar is dissolved from the ground material, or the starch or cellulose is converted into sugar. This is done through a cooking process.
Microbes such as yeast or bacteria feed on the sugar, producing ethanol in a process called fermentation, essentially the same way beer and wine are made. Carbon dioxide is a byproduct of this fermentation;
The ethanol is distilled to achieve a high concentration. Gasoline or another additive is added so it cannot be consumed by humans - a process called denaturation. This way, the ethanol also avoids a tax on beverage *******.
While Methanol is produced from synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen), itself derived from oil,coal or, increasingly, biomass. It may become central to the development of biorefineries as an intermediate in the conversion of biomass to useful products.
Every year a considerable number of people die due to methyl ******* poisoning, in which most of them die even before they are given proper treatment. This report gives a simple and cheap first aid measure to those affected by methanol poisoning by the administration of activated charcoal. This study has shown that the mortality of methanol recipient rats have significantly reduced by the administration of activated charcoal.
