Yup, but for simple notifications or attendance monitoring I guess beacon would be a viable solution, given that they can create their own beacon using arduino can boost up the strength of their thesis. That's both hardware and software implementations.

Another idea, traffic system of any place, you can place beacon to a place where you want to track the number of people inside that place, let's say Library, a student who's finding a place to study, can check on that android app if the school library is crowded, he/she can opt to study elsewhere.
