This is Filipino slang from the 70s and 80s. The word refers to the affluent “projects” (neighborhoods) of Quezon City. Transpose the syllables in the word ‘projects’ to get jeproks.

In the 1970’s, it referred to middle-class hippies whose families, unlike most Filipinos, didn’t have to eke out a harsh living. Hence, the young men were economically free to pursue a liberal lifestyle with loose morals and indulgence in drugs.

Filipino rock singer Mike Hanopol popularized the word in the 70’s in one of his songs.

Laki sa layaw, laki sa layaw, Jeproks!
Raised spoiled, raised spoiled, Jeprox!


Think of how American conservatives referred to hippies of the 60s and 70s as hoodlums.

The word jeproks is used with a less negative connotation for those who think that such kids were simply laid back, even cool, in their outlook and behavior.
