Netscape is published by AOL but developed by Mercurial Communications.
The History of Netscape-
- The first beta release for Netscape came out in 1994 and was known at the time as Mosaic. A legal challenge was was put against the name which led to the name change to Netscape Navigator.
- Version 2.0 was released which added a mail reader called Netscape Mail, this transformed Netscape from a mere web browser to an Internet suite.
- Version 3.0 of Netscape was in competition with Internet Explorer 3.0 but was still the number one browser for the time being. Netscape 3.0 introduced new features such as new plug-ins, background colors for tables, the archive attribute and the applet element.
- Version 4.0 introduced support of certain CSS1 elements, minimal dynamic font support and the proprietary object element. This version was quite successful despite the competition from Internet Explorer 4.0 and problems from the outdated browser core.
- Version 4.5 was released in October 1998. This version contained functionality improvements. A month later after the release of 4.5 the Netscape Communications Corporation was bought by AOL.
- Version 5.0 was cancelled as they wanted to develop a completely new program from scratch.
- Version 6.0 was released in 2000 and the code was based off of the Mozilla web browser. When released 6.0 flopped badly as it was not ready to release and was based on Mozilla 0.6.
- Version 7.0 was based off of Mozilla 1.0.1 and released in August 2002.
- In 2003 AOL closed down the Netscape division and laid off workers, Netscape was to still be developed "in house" which meant improvements would be minimal.
- Version 8.1.3 was released on April 2nd, 2007 which included general bug fixes that were identified in versions 8.0-8.1.2.
- Version 9.0 was released on October 15th, 2007. New features in this version were newsfeed support and become more integrated with the propeller internet portal, it also was able to be available to muliple Operating Systems such as Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.
