airplanes do not have side or rear mirrors. They are in constant contact with ATC who ensures that they aren't extremely close to another aircraft. By the time another plane is visible in the mirror, the planes would already be dangerously close, with little time for either to get out of the way, and in some cases, the aircraft end up colliding. When reversing out of the gate, the aircraft isn't actually reversing, it is being pushed back by another vehicle, which is responsible for safely moving the vehicle out of the gate. Because the pilots aren't in control during the time that they reverse out of the gate, they do not need mirrors to see what is behind them.

Besides that, having protruding metal objects on the side would reduce aerodynamic efficiency and therefore fuel efficiency. The connector between the mirror and fuselage would have to be very strong, so the mirror doesn't fly off while in the air and possibly damage the wings.
