Why is it that if someone tells you that there are 1 billion stars in the universe you will believe them, but if they tell you a wall has wet paint you will have to touch it to be sure?

Well, It's part of being a human. We are a naturally curious species; we are born with an innate drive to explore new stuffs, open ourselves to new experiences, and think about the what ifs and other possibilities. And our senses helps us to satisfy that little bit of doubt we feel. We have to feel, touch, smell and see to verify that if that thing is really legit. As for the stars, honestly, I wouldn't even try to count that billions of twinkling hot ball of gas (counting billions is so much for proving your point lol) So I simply sort of give up and accept whatever someone tells me, (just to shut them up hahaha dejk) so I can easily have the answer.
I really don't care about this stuffs tho since people can believe pretty much what they want when they want.
