You can think of a byte as one character. Or its rough equivalent in graphics. The fact that your number of bytes in and out are increasing means that traffic is passing normally.

The number of bytes sent is usually pretty small: any URL that you typed in, the name of the link that you clicked on, and the credit card number that you just filled out. The number of bytes that you receive is all of the information in the web pages that you got, including all of the graphics and movies. Almost always, the number of bytes received will be many hundreds of times what was sent.
