Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, released in Japan as Devil May Cry 3 (Japanese: デビルメイクライ3, Hepburn: Debiru Mei Kurai Surī), is an action-adventure and häçk-and-slash video game produced and published by Capcom in 2005 for PlayStation 2 (adapted for Microsoft Windows in 2006). The third in the Devil May Cry series, the game retains elements from the previous two games and expands the combat system by adding multiple fighting styles. The story is told primarily through a mix of cutscenes using the game engine with various pre-rendered videos.
The game takes place 10 years before the events of the first Devil May Cry, featuring a younger Dante in an enchanted tower called Temen-ni-gru. The story centers on Dante's dysfunctional relationship with his twin brother Vergil. The events occur around the time Dante opened his demon-hunting agency and before Dante's demonic heritage reached its full potential.
At the time of its release, Devil May Cry 3 was heavily criticized for its high level of difficulty, but highly praised for improving upon its predecessor and for bringing back the challenging gameplay typical of the Devil May Cry series.
Devil May Cry 3 was a commercial success, becoming the eighth best-selling game in Japan in its first week of release. A new version of the game was released in 2006 as Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition with rebalanced difficulty and the ability to play as Vergil. Both versions combined sold over two million copies. A manga serving as a prologue and bearing the same name as the game was published in
