Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, known in Japan as Tomodachi Collection: Exciting Life, is a social simulation game set in 2026 developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is the third title in the Tomodachi Life series, following Tomodachi Life (2013), which was released for the Nintendo 3DS. The game focuses on the daily lives of Miis, customizable avatars who live on an island and autonomously develop relationships and solve problems, all under the player's supervision.
Production of Living the Dream began in 2017, shortly after the completion of development for the mobile app Miitomo (2016). Director Ryutaro Takahashi and producer Yoshio Sakamoto were inspired to create a sequel to Tomodachi Life, as they felt the technical limitations of the 3DS restricted the game's scale. The creation of means for user-generated content was an initiative to increase replayability. The designs of the Mii characters were adjusted through trial and error; they ended up being made more cartoonish, while their robotic voices from previous games were retained to preserve their distinct personalities.
Before its release, fans and critics praised Living the Dream's greater inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community, particularly the addition of same-*** relationships, compared to previous games in the series. The game was released worldwide on April 16, 2026, and by March 2026 had sold 3.8 million copies. Living the Dream received praise for its customization options and humor, while its gameplay generated mixed reactions due to occasional repetitiveness. The lack of online functionality, especially screenshot and Mii sharing, was criticized.
