Wombats are the only known creatures on Earth that produce cube-shaped feces, depositing up to 100 distinctive square droppings every single night.
Because wombats have poor eyesight, they rely on scent marking to navigate and signal territory. They stack their droppings on top of elevated rocks, fallen logs, and small mounds so the scent travels further in the wind.
Their intestinal walls have variable elasticity—alternating between stiff and flexible zones in the final 8% of the digestive tract. As water is absorbed, the digestive tissue contracts rhythmically, pressing the dried waste into flat-edged 2 cm cubes.
The flat surfaces prevent the droppings from rolling off elevated rocks, keeping their territorial markers exactly where they placed them.
