Food choices in the Philippines aren't determined only by taste or nutrition. DOST-FNRI's national nutrition research examined the different environments where Filipinos obtain food, including wet markets, sari-sari stores, carinderias, supermarkets, convenience stores, street vendors, online sellers, farms, rivers, and coastal areas.
This means two households can have very different food options simply because their local food environments are different. Accessibility can influence what is convenient to buy regularly.
The study highlights how the places surrounding a household can quietly shape everyday eating habits. Food culture therefore involves geography and accessibility as much as recipes.
