The Lantaka, or traditional cannon, has a long history among Maranao and Maguindanao communities.

The NCCA inventory recognizes the traditional knowledge associated with making and using lantaka as intangible heritage.

These small cannons were historically used for defense, signaling, and other community purposes.

Their production required specialized metalworking knowledge rather than simply assembling a commercially manufactured object. The tradition therefore preserves both an object and the technical knowledge needed to create it.

It is an unusual example of Philippine heritage where traditional craftsmanship is connected to historic weapon technology.
