The Sagayan is a traditional dance associated with the Maranao and Maguindanao peoples of Mindanao. It dramatizes episodes from the Darangen, particularly the adventures of the hero Datu Bantugan.

Dancers traditionally carry a kampilan sword and a decorated shield while performing rapid stomping, jumping, turning, and sweeping movements. The accompanying music comes from gong ensembles such as the tagunggo.

What makes the tradition especially interesting is that its story ultimately moves from conflict toward peace and reconciliation.

The National Museum notes that Sagayan was performed during special celebrations even before the modern Sagayan festivals were established.
