Traditional Arabic Kohl is both a cosmetic craft and a social practice in communities across several Arab countries. It has been used among Bedouin, nomadic, rural, marshland, and fishing communities.

The tradition involves knowledge about preparing and applying the fine cosmetic material. Its use can be connected with personal appearance, social customs, and community identity. Knowledge about producing and using kohl has been transmitted between generations.

UNESCO inscribed Arabic Kohl as multinational intangible cultural heritage in 2025. A familiar cosmetic therefore also carries traditional knowledge and social meaning.
