🕯️ Traditions Ilocanos Have a Traditional Method of Making Salt From Seawater

The Ilocano Agsana is a traditional salt-making practice documented in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur.

The process uses seawater from the western coast of Luzon to produce salt. Traditional salt making requires knowledge of seawater, evaporation, timing, and local environmental conditions.

The practice is particularly interesting because salt production has been an important livelihood along northwestern Luzon for generations.

The NCCA classifies Agsana as traditional knowledge concerning nature and the universe. A basic household ingredient can therefore preserve a surprisingly specialized local tradition.
