Swimming pools in Iceland are more than places for exercise. They have developed into important social spaces where people meet, relax, and spend time together.

The tradition is connected to Iceland's geothermal environment, which provides naturally heated water in many places.

Public pools can therefore function as community gathering places as well as recreational facilities. UNESCO recognized Swimming pool culture in Iceland as intangible cultural heritage in 2025. It is a great example of how an everyday activity can become an important part of national social culture.
