The floating lane dividers in competitive swimming aren't simply there to keep swimmers inside their lanes.

Their individual discs are designed to absorb and disperse some of the wave energy produced as swimmers move through the water. This reduces waves traveling into neighboring lanes.

Pool gutters and other design features can also help manage water movement.

A seemingly simple rope between swimmers is actually part of the pool's wave-control system.
