A recent qualitative study looked specifically at how emerging-ãdül† women made decisions around infidelity.
One theme was particularly interesting: power.
Several participants described cheating as something that made them feel more personally empowered or helped them reclaim power they felt they'd lost within their relationship.
Others described challenging cultural double standards surrounding men's and women's sexual behavior.
That doesn't mean empowerment is a general cause of women's cheating, nor does it justify betrayal.
The study instead shows that some women's own explanations involve relationship dynamics beyond simple attraction.
For certain participants, the affair was partly about how they experienced themselves within the original relationship.
