When couples feel bored, doing something exciting together sounds like an obvious solution.
But researchers followed 122 couples for 21 days and discovered an interesting problem.
Greater relationship boredom was associated with obstacles to both the occurrence and quality of exciting shared activities.
Less enjoyable shared activities were associated with lower passion that same day.
Doing fewer exciting activities also statistically accounted for declines in passion over time.
So boredom may sometimes make people less likely to engage successfully in the very experiences that could help keep their relationship exciting.
