Cats evolved both as predators and as animals vulnerable to larger predators, and obvious signs of weakness can carry disadvantages.
As a result, pain may appear as subtle behavioral changes rather than dramatic crying.
A cat might hide more, jump less, change grooming habits, become unusually irritable, sleep differently, or change how it eats.
Owners sometimes mistake these changes for normal aging or personality.
A suddenly “quiet” cat isn't necessarily a comfortable cat.
